The Blessings of a Disciple
Matthew 5:1-6

It is crucial to understand that Jesus is not adding to Old Covenant laws in the Sermon on the Mount.

We cannot make our flesh conform to the beatitudes that Jesus gives.

Verse 3

"Poor in Spirit" does not mean depressed, but rather refers to an understanding of One's need for God. (Matthew 19:14)

Verse 4

"Mourning" does not mean an endless sadness, but rather refers to a longing for the world around you to experience what you have tasted

Verse 5

"Meekness" does not mean being a wimp, but is rather the result of no longer manipulating the people and circumstances around you to meet your fleshly desires.

Verse 6

We cannot make our flesh hunger and thirst for righteousness Jesus is communicating hope for the dry spots we will experience on our journey.
