Prophecy in New Testament

Definition of 'prophecy' - a discourse emanating (coming) from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God, whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked, or comforting the afflicted, or revealing things hidden; esp. by foretelling future events. (Friberg Greek Lexicon)

2 Peter 1:21 - Prophecy is not an act of human will.

1 Corinthians 14:1 - We should desire and pursue spiritual gifts, especially prophecy.

1 Timothy 1:18 - Timothy was to rely on the prophecies made about him in order to fight the battles he faced.

1 Timothy 4:14 - Timothy received a spiritual gift following a word of prophecy that declared God wanted to give it.

Joel 2:28,29 - Both men and women are able to prophesy.

Romans 12:6 - Prophecy is a gift that one must continually mature in after receiving.

1 Corinthians 1:7: 13:10 - Prophecy and the other gifts will continue until Christ returns.

Ephesians 4:11,12 - Prophecy and the other gifts are for equipping the church for service, not to get us by until scripture was completed.

1 Corinthians 14:29-40 - Prophecy is expected to be a regular part of church gatherings. It is to be done in orderly manner and should be judged as whether coming from God or not. Judgment is placed upon the shoulders of the men only.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 - To despise prophecy is to quench the Holy Spirit. Prophetic words should always be examined, rather than despised.
