Worship through Dance

Psalm 149:1-4
“Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
and His praise in the assembly of the saints.
Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
Let them praise His name with the dance;
let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.
For the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
he will beautify the humble with salvation.”

As you may know, we are starting a worship dance team here at Sesser First Christian as a way of expressing the artistry and creativity of God. Dance is an area of worship that is mentioned many times in the Old Testament. It is specifically commanded in Psalm 149 that we “praise His name with the dance”. In the days of David, there was a sacred worship dance that they did for the Lord. Ecclesiastes says there is a “time to dance and a time to mourn”. Dancing in the Bible was a natural expression of love for the Lord. And just as we learn the words and notes to songs, we are learning movements to dances in an effort to better express ourselves. Dancing, like so many things, has been perverted by the secular world. It has been used to promote people and not God; it has been used to lure people into impure behavior. So let’s take dancing back to what it was designed to be...an artistic way of expressing our praise to God for all that He is and does.

It’s too late to join us for this first dance, Here I am to Worship, but if you’d like to join us for the next dance, we’d love to have you.

What does the Bible say about worship? dancing & praise?

Psalm 30:11
You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,

Jeremiah 31:4
I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful.

Jeremiah 31:13
Then maidens will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.

Psalm 149:3
Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp.

2 Kings 17:39
 Worship the LORD your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies."

Psalm 150:4
praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe,

1 Chronicles 16:29  & Psalm 29:2 & Psalm 96:9
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his  holiness.

Psalm 30:11
You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness,

Nehemiah 9:6
You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

2 Samuel 6:14
Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might,

2 Samuel 6:21 & 23
David retorted to Michal, “I was dancing before the Lord, who chose me above your father and all his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the Lord, so I celebrate before the Lord.    23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

 We’ll start working on it sometime in October.
